Virginia Tech football: Linebacker Caleb Woodson enters transfer portal

Woodson already has a big visit lined up.

On a day when Virginia Tech safety Quentin Reddish revealed he was returning to Blacksburg to play for new head coach James Franklin in 2026, another defensive starter revealed his departure.

Linebacker Caleb Woodson entered the NCAA transfer portal on Friday after three seasons with the Hokies. The 6-foot-3, 230-pound native of Haymarket, Virginia, appeared in 35 games for the Hokies over the last three years, recording 152 tackles, including 11.5 for loss and two sacks. Woodson also had one interception.

An injury cost Woodson part of the 2025 season, but he returned late in the year, even after the Hokies had hired head coach Brent Pry.

It didn’t take long for Woodson to line up a visit. According to Hayes Fawcett of On3, Woodson will visit Alabama on Sunday, January 4.

With Franklin reshaping the Virginia Tech roster, many moves were expected. While the Hokies have kept most of the players they prioritized thus far, it’s unknown whether Woodson’s departure is a mutual decision or simply a case of Woodson seeking another opportunity to enhance his NFL prospects in 2026.

The Hokies are still waiting on confirmation that promising freshman Noah Chambers will return next season.

We wish Caleb Woodson the best of luck at his next stop.
