Everything is awesome!
Enzo Maresca has disappeared in a cloud of smoke like Houdini, and in his stead, with (almost) his entire staff gone as well, we’ve got U21 head coach Calum McFarlane and his crew taking charge this weekend.
(The one confirmed holdover is, of course, set piece coach Bernardo Cueva. Most be because of our tremendous record in defending long throws.)
McFarlane’s remit extends to only this weekend as things stand. The U21s don’t have a game until next Wednesday and Chelsea are working on a permanent replacement for Maresca.
“It’s been a crazy 24 hours. A whirlwind, as you can imagine. But also really enjoyable and really exciting. I can only feel positive about it. It’s an amazing experience.”
“[We] are all in it for the same reason. We all love football and we’re here to support them. Training was really good today. There was a really good energy. The lads have been brilliant. The staff at the club have been brilliant. You can’t ask for any more.”
It’s certainly not the worst situation for McFarlane. There’s no pressure and even fewer expectations. From his perspective, it’s hard to think of a better first step in non-academy coaching. What a lovely club, indeed!
“the energy, enthusiasm and training was exceptional today. [The players] seem really focused. They’re really driven and hungry. They know we’ve got a massive game on Sunday and we’re going to have to be at our best. You can feel that. They’re professionals. They’ve done this a long time.”
“We’ll go there and compete. We’ve seen this year how this team can do in big moments. We’re really looking forward to that challenge. […] My message to them is bringing the best version of themselves and being all in it together and believing that we can get the next couple of days right and hopefully put in a good performance on Sunday.”

Perhaps we can channel McFarlane’s positive vibes into a shock upset.
