One Avalanche prospect made the cut.
It was a very relaxed month of December with only seven games on the schedule for the Colorado Eagles plus a lengthy holiday break. Still, the Colorado Avalanche’s AHL affiliate kept up in the standings with a record of 6-1 including a pair of overtime wins against Henderson and finished out the month with a thriller 6-5 overtime win in Calgary. For their efforts, the Eagles maintained their spot at the top of the Pacific Division standings at 41 points with a record of 20-6-1.
First Star – D Jack Ahcan – 20 GP: 4G, 15A, 19P
It was obvious when 10 of his 19 points this season were produced in the last four games that Jack Ahcan is on a heater and had to be our first star of the month. The left handed defenseman has picked up the slack from Jacob MacDonald’s absence and is the man to run the Eagles power play as evidenced by his eight points on the man advantage. Ahcan is likely still the first option on defense should the Avalanche have a need at the position.
Second Star – F Alex Barre-Boulet – 27GP: 9G, 15A, 24P
We expect AHL veterans to become the top producers on their clubs because they are paid a hefty guaranteed salary even if they spend the entire season at the minor league level. Alex Barre-Boulet is no exception as he’s been a driving force for this Eagles squad and is also on a heater with a five-game point streak to close out the month which has accumulated to eight points. Barre-Boulet has also enjoyed a large role on the power play where seven of his points have come from. Despite not getting a recall to the Avalanche yet, it wouldn’t be a shock if he got a look at some point.
Third Star – F Taylor Makar – 25GP: 6G, 3A, 9P
The younger Makar really got things going at the end of November with his first multi-goal game but punctuated that performance with more goal scoring in December. First, he added another two goal performance to his resume and then finished the month with one additional goal for three in the month. Prospects are required to do most of their damage at even strength and such is the case for all of Makar’s production. With some more experience the younger Makar should be ready for another call up this season.
