Not dead yet!
Enzo Maresca, having won just one of his last seven Premier League games in charge, skipped Tuesday night’s post-match press conference, citing illness. Entirely unsurprisingly, that appears to have been a fairly transparent attempt at a cover story. Somewhat surprisingly, the story being covered up was apparently not that Chelsea were considering Maresca’s future, but that Maresca himself was considering his own future at the club — and possibly willing to walk away, forfeiting millions in the process.
At least that’s the narrative from the club Ben Jacobs, who claims that even though Chelsea have “no plans” to sack the head coach after a most disastrous month, Maresca is continuing to feel unsupported and underappreciated and he’s “struggling to work within certain conditions” present at the club.
Other reports, such as from the BBC, the Telegraph, or The Guardian are painting a very similar picture, and it would appear that the rift between the head coach and the higher-ups has become quite wide. The discord with the club’s leadership that was hinted at by those “worst 48 hours” comments is not only real, but evidently quite palpable. The latter report is calling it a complete breakdown, and there’s usually no coming back from that, regardless of whose was the final straw.
So, as we say goodbye to 2025, we might be saying hello to more than just 2026…
