Kevin Sumlin is a gambling man.

The former Arizona Wildcats football coach has been named the head coach of the UFL’s Houston Gamblers. This is Sumlin’s second stint leading the Gamblers after coaching the team in 2022 to a 3-7 record when the Gamblers were part of the USFL.

Sumlin built his coaching reputation in Houston, where he led the University of Houston Cougars from 2008-2011. Sumlin led Houston to a pair of double-digit win seasons before leaving to take the Texas A&M job in 2012.

Sumlin was fired from Texas A&M in November 2017. Two months later Arizona hired him as its next coach, replacing Rich Rodriguez.

Sumlin went 9-20 in three seasons at Arizona. He’ll be remembered most for the 2020 season when the Wildcats went 0-6 and lost to ASU 70-7 in the Territorial Cup.

Sumlin most recently served for two seasons as Maryland’s associate head coach/co-offensive coordinator. While at Maryland, Sumlin was arrested in October 2023 for driving under the influence.

Sumlin stepped away from the program in early 2025.

The UFL season gets underway in late March and runs through early June.
