PSV Eindhoven have rejected a £26 million bid for United States international Ricardo Pepi, according to The Athletic.
The Cottagers have not given up on the young striker as they are expected to return with another offer.
But Fulham face competition from other clubs who could also make a move for him in the winter transfer window.
PSV are under no pressure to sell in January as Pepi is contracted with them until 2030.
Fulham already have two strikers in Raul Jimenez and Rodrigo Muniz.
Jimenez scored the winner in Saturday’s 1-0 win against West Ham United, but he has turned 34 and his contract will expire in June next year.
Muniz netted 11 goals last season, but he has been limited to just four Premier League starts this term due to injury issues.
Fulham need to make a quality addition like Pepi, who has been earning rave reviews with his performances since joining PSV in 2023.
He has recorded 36 goals and eight assists in 89 appearances for the Dutch giants.
The 22-year-old has been averaging over a goal per game across all competitions this season, helping his team take an 11 points lead at the top of the Eredivisie table.
Before PSV, Pepi enjoyed an excellent loan spell at FC Groningen from Bundesliga side FC Augsburg.
He joined Augsburg in 2022 from FC Dallas following a breakout 2021 season for the MLS outfit.
Pepi is very young and boasts good physical presence, intelligent link-up play and superb finishing ability.
Fulham would love to bring him to Craven Cottage this winter, but it remains to be seen if they manage to agree a fee with PSV.
