The Green Bay Packers still have an open roster spot on the 53-man roster and the practice squad.
The Green Bay Packers have shaken up their roster. Obviously, the team was going to have to make some new additions to the 53-man roster, after both defensive tackle Jordon Riley and cornerback Kamal Hadden suffered season-ending injuries against the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday. On Tuesday, both Hadden and Riley were placed on injured reserve, which gave the Packers three open roster spots on the 53-man roster, to go along with Kristian Welch’s placement on the IR last week.
Green Bay officially announced the addition of defensive tackle Jonathan Ford, a 2022 seventh-round pick of the Packers. Ford was claimed off waivers from the Chicago Bears. Along with the addition of Ford, though, the team waived defensive tackle Quinton Bohanna, who was added to the 53-man roster after the Devonte Wyatt injury earlier this month. Bohanna only played one game for Green Bay, last week’s action against the Ravens.
The Packers also added cornerbacks Shemar Bartholomew and Jaylin Simpson to the 53-man roster from the practice squad. Simpson was brought in in August and is a hybrid cornerback and safety. The former 2024 draft pick was actually called up to the gameday roster against the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving, but he didn’t see live action in the game. Bartholomew was signed to the practice squad in Week 14 after previously spending time with the Carolina Panthers and Minnesota Vikings practice squads this season.
So with the additions of Ford, Bartholomew and Simpson to the 53-man roster and the losses of Hadden, Riley and Bohanna, the team still has one open roster spot on the active roster.
With the promotion of both Bartholomew and Simpson, the team had two open spots available on the practice squad. The team also filled one of those spots on Tuesday with the signing of running back Damien Martinez.
Martinez, a two-time All-Pac 12 back, was one of the bigger names in the transfer portal in the 2024 class. While he didn’t have the same success at Miami, where he ended up transferring to, he was ranked as the 101st overall player in the 2025 class, per the consensus draft board.
Surprisingly, Martinez ended up getting drafted in the seventh round of April’s draft by the Seattle Seahawks and didn’t make the team’s final roster. After being released from the Seahawks’ practice squad during the 2025 season, he’s had workouts with the Indianapolis Colts, New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs.
Martinez is still only 21 years old.
Look for the Packers to potentially make more moves this week, as Green Bay still has a spot to fill on the 53-man roster and the practice squad.
