Tensions are rising already.
Former Espanyol president Joan Collet has warned the team to focus on the game and not the return of Joan Garcia ahead of Saturday’s match with Barcelona.
Garcia is set to make his first return to his former club on Saturday, with Espanyol having already upgraded security measures for the match.
Collet says that Espanyol – who are enjoying a good season so far – need to avoid the mistake of placing too much importance on the goalkeeper’s return.
“There’s too much talk about Joan Garcia. Things are getting too heated, I think even more so than necessary, to be honest,” he told El Partidazo de COPE.
“We’re already approaching the extreme, aren’t we? You can shout, you can whistle, but I think it shouldn’t go any further than this.
“We can’t fall into the temptation or the mistake of what happened with Figo. We’re playing against our city rivals; we have to focus more on the importance of the opponent.”
Barcelona head into the match on a great run of form. Hansi Flick’s side have won eight straight games ahead of the trip to the RCDE Stadium to sit four points clear at the top of the table.
