Official | Gabon release Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang early to return to Marseille

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been released early from international duty with Gabon at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and will return to Olympique de Marseille to continue his recovery.

Gabon were already eliminated from the tournament before their final group-stage match against hosts Côte d’Ivoire on 31 December. The Gabonese Football Federation (FEGAFOOT) confirmed that Aubameyang will not take part in the fixture after experiencing discomfort in his left thigh following Gabon’s match against Mozambique.

In a statement, Gabon explained that the decision was taken in agreement with Marseille’s medical staff, following “daily clinical examinations”. With the final group match carrying no sporting stakes for Gabon, both parties opted to prioritise the player’s physical condition.

As a result, Aubameyang has been made available to Marseille in order to continue his treatment at club level. It remains unclear whether the 35-year-old will be fit in time for OM’s Ligue 1 encounter against Nantes next weekend.GFFN | George Boxall
