GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WLNS) – The Michigan State hockey team returned to the ice on Sunday night for the first time since December 6th. The Spartans defeated Ferris State 5-2 to advance to the Great Lakes Invitational championship game.
MSU’s first goal of the night came from freshman Cole Burke. This was Burke’s first career appearance as a Spartan. Burke’s goal was quickly followed up with another by fellow freshman Anthony Romani, and Michigan State led 2-0 after the first period.
In the second period, senior forward Charlie Stramel made it 3-0, and not even a minute after his goal, junior Tommi Männistö scored to make it 4-0.
Ferris State did go on to get two goals back. Redshirt junior Carter Rapalje recorded one, as well as senior Josh Zary.
Stramel scored his second goal of the night in the 3rd period, and that sealed the deal for the Spartans’ 5-2 victory.
They’ll take on Michigan Tech Monday, December 29th, at Van Andel Arena at 7 P.M. in the GLI championship game.
