The midfielder faces a race against time to make the tournament.
Barcelona midfielder Gavi says he’s still dreaming of making the Spain squad for World Cup 2026 as he continues his recovery from knee surgery.
Gavi is still out injured and not due to return for another month or two, meaning he may have a tough job making it into Luis de la Fuente’s squad for the tournament.
However, the 21-year-old isn’t giving up hope yet of making the roster for the tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
“Going to the World Cup would be very good, that’s what I want, although I must focus on recovery, finish the season with Barça and then it would be great to be able to go to the World Cup,” he told Mundo Deportivo.
Gavi also says that De la Fuente has remained in touch with him while he’s been sidelined.
“He has always worried about me. He calls me many times to find out how I am. I’m very grateful to him because he’s always been on the lookout,” he added.
Hansi Flick has also been a source of support to Gavi during the last few difficult months, and he’s grateful to the German coach for his help.
“The coach is always supporting me and giving me advice,” he added. “He has also had serious injuries and I am very grateful to him because he always cares about me and gives me very good advice.”
The current thinking is that Gavi could be passed fit by February or March but it may take a little while longer for him to get back to his best form after another long lay-off.
