A Premier League club has reportedly made a shock enquiry for Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo.

Mainoo still trying to find his place under Ruben Amorim

Mainoo enjoyed a superb breakthrough campaign in 2023/24, rapidly rising to almost become a guaranteed starter under Erik ten Hag.

Mainoo impressed and in the process, earned himself a spot in England’s Euro 2024 squad. He was top-class at the tournament and even played in the final as the Three Lions fell to a defeat at the hands of Spain.

However, Mainoo endured a difficult 2024/25 campaign, due to a combination of injuries and poor form.

United head coach Amorim has so far been unable to identify a defined role or position for Mainoo. The young midfielder has been tried in the pivot, as a number ten and even as a false nine but he has yet to show where he truly belongs.

His situation hasn’t been helped by the contract uncertainty surrounding him. United have been in talks with Mainoo’s camp for weeks now over a new deal but an agreement has yet to be struck.

It’s understood the two parties remain some distance apart in terms of what the player pay package.

As things rumble on, Mainoo has been linked to some top clubs in Europe, including long-term admirers Chelsea and Bayern Munich.

Now, a fresh report has indicated that another surprise Premier League outfit have entered the fray for the Carrington academy graduate – Tottenham Hotspur.

Tottenham make enquiry for Mainoo

Graeme Bailey of TBR Football claims, “Tottenham Hotspur have asked about signing Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo.”

“The North London club appreciate the 20-year-old and are keeping abreast of his contract situation, which still hasn’t been agreed with Manchester United.”

“Should the United academy graduate become available for transfer this summer, Spurs would most certainly be keen to get involved in the race to sign him.”

Bailey adds that Mainoo’s preference is to continue at Old Trafford but the longer contract talks drag on, the more likely he is to start weighing up his options. United could also consider selling him at that point.

With the World Cup next summer, no doubt Mainoo will be yearning to play regularly and if he feels that may not be possible at United while Amorim is still in charge, the player may be persuaded to seek a fresh challenge.
