Dolphins Could Go After Former First-Round Pick Noah Fant Following Surprise Release

The Miami Dolphins tight end room is thin behind Darren Waller, and this recently released former first-round pick could be target to bolster the Dolphins' group.

The Seattle Seahawks announced the release of veteran tight end Noah Fant on Sunday, two days before the veterans reported to training camp. The move saved the Seahawks $8.91 million in cap space, and now Fant is a free agent.

Fant was drafted in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos and spent the first three years of his career in Denver. In 2022, the Broncos traded Fant to the Seahawks as part of the package to acquire quarterback Russell Wilson. Fant had spent the last three years in Seattle.

The Miami Herald's Barry Jackson suggested the Miami Dolphins could be a team to target Fant now that he's a free agent. After trading tight end Jonnu Smith to the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Dolphins traded for tight end Darren Waller, who came out of retirement.

Although Fant would be an upgrade at tight end and add some depth to the position, as Jackson mentioned, the Dolphins may have a more pressing need.

The Dolphins' current No. 1 corner is Kader Kohou, who will be the nickel back. After that, the Dolphins are relying on young, developing players Storm Duck and Cam Smith to fill the position.

Miami did sign Artie Burns and Kendall Sheffield in the offseason, but those guys bring more depth at the position than star power. The Dolphins' other options include third-year speedster Ethan Bonner and rookie Jason Marshall Jr., who will both have a chance to compete for a starting position in training camp.

Although Fant wouldn't be an inexpensive pickup, the Dolphins only have $2.25 million available in cap space for 2025, according to Jackson, which makes it difficult to spread across multiple positions.

The addition of Fant would definitely improve the Dolphins' tight end room, but Miami may need to focus on the cornerback position first.
