NY Knicks bolster depth in Karl-Anthony Towns mock trade

In a recent NBA mock trade, the Knicks part with All-Star Karl-Anthony Towns to bolster their depth on the perimeter.

Despite being a major catalyst in their conference finals run last season, many argued that the New York Knicks needed to part with Karl-Anthony Towns after their elimination. As the offseason rolls along, one framework surfaced where they part with the All-Star big man in exchange for more depth.

Last offseason, the Knicks parted with an All-Star-level talent in Julius Randle to acquire Towns from the Minnesota Timberwolves. He quickly adapted to his new situation, proving to be a viable running mate for Jalen Brunson. During the regular season, Towns averaged 24.4 PPG and 12.8 RPG while shooting 42.0% from beyond the arc. The former No. 1 pick maintained this production through the postseason, helping New York reach the conference finals for the first time in 25 years.

The trade

Suns receive - Karl-Anthony Towns and Pacome Dadiet

Knicks receive - Dillon Brooks, Grayson Allen, Nick Richards, a 2026 second-round pick, a 2029 second-round pick, a 2029 second-round pick, and an unprotected 2032 first round pick swap

Hawks Receive - Tyler Kolek

While this is a sizable return for Towns, it's not a move the Knicks should realistically consider. New York has already filled out their roster with quality depth pieces. Dillon Brooks, Grayson Allen, and Nick Richards are all rotation-level players, but they'd create a logjam at multiple positions. Having this many guys seeking consistent minutes would only result in an unhappy locker room.

Looking at the rest of the contenders in the league, having adequate depth is essential. That said, star power is needed as well. Though his game has some limitations, Towns' impact offensively makes him a crucial piece for the Knicks. He is someone capable of having success playing off Jalen Brunson, and can lead the charge when the star guard is off the bench.

Given their recent playoff success and the current state of the Eastern Conference, the Knicks should be in no rush to split up their star duo.
