NORMAL, Ill. (WMBD/WYZZ) — If you’re a college football coach and you’re still game-planning for an opponent the week of Christmas, you’ve had a good year.
With players away on a holiday break, Illinois State coaches are having a working holiday week as they try and get ready for the FCS national championship game. The Redbirds will play Montana State for the national title on Jan. 5 in Nashville.
ISU’s campus is very quiet with students on semester break and football players home for Christmas. But the coach’s offices are still active.
“There’s not too many teams left, everybody is everybody is celebrating Christmas,” said ISU coach Brock Spack about the number of college coaches still working this late in December.
After ISU beat Villanova in the3 national semifinals last Saturday, Spack gave his players the rest of the week off to enjoy with their families.
“Our guys are home for a week. They are trying to get healthy,” said Spack. “They have a heck of an experience in front of them when they come back Saturday and start practicing again.”
Spack’s players will return to campus late Friday and then be back in pads for practice on Saturday.
This is the second time Illinois State has played in the FCS national championship. North Dakota State beat ISU for the title at the end of the 2014 season.
