The Los Angeles Dodgers are, unsurprisingly, expected to be active at the trade deadline. While their top need, bullpen, is well discussed, a new report shed light on another part of the roster the Dodgers might address.
According to Jim Bowden of The Athletic, the Dodgers want to add a utility player amid the team's injuries. There have been a few injuries to the lineup lately, and it could force the Dodgers hand at the deadline.
"The Dodgers will be open to also adding a utility player to help fill the gaps left by their injured players," Bowden writes, "including third baseman Max Muncy, who is making progress in his recovery from a knee injury."
A utility player would help provide depth at multiple positions on the roster, while also, likely, not costing the team a fortune either to land or have on the roster.
One of the names to monitor would be Pittsburgh Pirates utility man Isiah Kiner-Falefa. He's played multiple positions in his career, though most of his work this season has been at shortstop.
But, he can play third base, second base, and in the outfield if needed. Of the utility options on the trade market, he'd be the best, as he's hitting .276 this season.
There are other options for the Dodgers to consider, but the priority is adding depth to the roster. Muncy is out, Enrique Hernandez is also out, and the rest of the bench lacks flexibility.
Adding a utility player to the roster would help shore up multiple positions, and help the team stay afloat amid the numerous injuries on the roster.
It may not be a blockbuster move, but the Dodgers roster is strong; there's not much that needs to be done to improve the lineup, other than adding depth.
