It hasn't always been sunshine and rainbows for former Boston Red Sox reliever Daniel Bard. Bard, a fan favorite in Boston and with the team from 2009 until 2013, has been through it all in his professional baseball career. He's dealt with injuries, personal struggles off the field mentally, and much more.

However, Bard continued to grind, doing everything he could to give his team the best opportunity to win every day.

And after a long and successful career, the right-hander has decided to hang them up. According to an announcement on his Instagram, Bard has agreed to step away from the game at 40.

“This time, it's different. I couldn't be more appreciative for what baseball has done for me and my family. I found the fun and beauty in the game again. I've made countless friends around the country. I've been able to share the experiences, travel, the highs and lows with Adair and the kids, and they're old enough to remember it this time. I got to pitch in a professional baseball game on my 40th birthday. I've come back from the yips multiple times, been through several surgeries and their rehabs, and I couldn't be more thankful for the whole journey,” he wrote.

During his long MLB career, which spanned nine seasons, Bard appeared in two playoff games for the Red Sox, posting a 0.00 ERA in 3.00 innings.

During his time with the Red Sox, he owned a 3.67 ERA and struck out 252 hitters in 257.1 innings.
