Why Liverpool's January move for Antoine Semenyo is now GUARANTEED

Liverpool are no strangers to doing business in the January window, but they very rarely recruit on impulse alone.

Even when the situation seems dire the Reds will not turn to the transfer market unless they feel the right player is available, the winter window of 2021 is the perfect example.

Despite being left with no senior central defenders fit, the Reds still refused to turn to the transfer market until the very end of the window when Ben Davies and Ozan Kabak were bought in as emergency options.

Liverpool’s recent January business has usually happened when a long-term target is approached by another club, and the same situation could play out once again this winter.

Liverpool must now act on Antoine Semenyo interest

The name linked most with a Merseyside move this January is Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo, with the forward’s release clause activating on the turn of the New Year.

The Reds have been linked with Semenyo for a while, but recent news of Alexander Isak’s broken leg and subsequent surgery have only added fuel to the fire.

Liverpool are not the only team interested in the 25-year-old however, both Manchester teams and Tottenham have also been constantly linked this season and now another team has entered the race.

According to Sky Sports News, Chelsea have made contact with Bournemouth to find out exactly what it will take to sign Semenyo next month, adding another element to the most spoken about transfer saga of the winter.

Why Liverpool will move to sign Semenyo

If Liverpool’s strategy is to only act on long-term interest in January if they risk losing out on a target, the time is now to move for Semenyo.

The Ghana international has 11 goals and assists for The Cherries this season and it looks increasingly likely that his release clause, which reportedly sits at just under £65 million, will be triggered early in the January window.

Chelsea’s interest will only spur Liverpool on to trigger the clause and add some much-needed depth to their XI.

Whether or not Liverpool secure their man may come down to the player’s personal presence and, although reports vary, Liverpool are rumoured to be high on Semenyo’s list.

Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes have garnered a reputation for being opportunistic and, with Chelsea now among the clubs circling, it seems almost guaranteed Liverpool will move for Semenyo.
