ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – Life is often a one-shot performance.

For Corning’s Jeff Cortright he’s making the most of every last shot he is given. A world archery champion and Corning-Painted Post Sports Hall of Fame inductee, Cortright has become the most successful in the world for his countless years and hours of dedication to the sport.

Known for practicing archery for over six hours per day in his competitive days, Cortright has inspired many on his journey to the top. After winning a world title in 2012, Cortright was faced with the biggest challenge of his life.

He was diagnosed with stage IV Gastrointestinal stromal tumors cancer. For over decade, Jeff has battled and fought through four different surgeries, severe weight loss and is staring death right in the eye.

18 Sports took the opportunity and privilege of interviewing Jeff on his journey back to full heath. But amid that process, Cortright is forced to leave behind the sport he loves as he physically can’t compete like he used to. It’s a journey that he continues to write each day he is given. One day and one shot at a time. Click on the video player to watch the full story.
