Ben Roethlisberger believes DK Metcalf suspension could open the door for embattled Steelers receiver

The Steelers legend thinks the Metcalf suspension could provide a silver lining for the team.

The Pittsburgh Steelers will be without star wide receiver DK Metcalf for the final two games of the regular season after the NFL upheld his two-game suspension stemming from an altercation with a fan in Detroit. While the loss of Metcalf is a significant on-field blow, one former franchise icon believes the situation may ultimately present an unexpected benefit.

Speaking on his “Footbahlin” podcast, former Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger shared a unique perspective on the suspension and how it could shape the Steelers’ receiving corps heading into the postseason.

“I think what this could end up doing, as crazy as it sounds, is it could benefit us,” Roethlisberger said. “We’re gonna have to see who else can play. I assume Roman Wilson is gonna finally get a hat and get out there.”

Wilson has endured a turbulent stretch in Pittsburgh. After missing much of the 2024 season due to injury, the second-year receiver has struggled to carve out a consistent role. Through 12 games this season, he has just 12 receptions and has been inactive in each of the past two contests following the team’s acquisition of veteran Adam Thielen. Chemistry with quarterback Aaron Rodgers has also appeared elusive, contributing to his limited opportunities.

Circumstances may now force a change.

Beyond Metcalf’s absence, the Steelers are monitoring the health of Calvin Austin III, who exited Sunday’s game against Detroit with a hamstring injury. His status for this weekend’s divisional matchup in Cleveland remains uncertain. Should Austin be unavailable, Wilson’s chances of returning to the active roster — and assuming an expanded role — would increase even more.

Pittsburgh enters the final stretch not only managing injuries but also positioning itself for a potential AFC North title. If the Ravens fall to the Packers on Saturday night, the Steelers could clinch the division before even taking the field, potentially allowing the coaching staff additional flexibility to evaluate depth options such as Wilson.

For Roethlisberger, this moment represents more than necessity — it’s an opportunity.

With expectations that Wilson will at least get a hat over the final two weeks, the spotlight shifts squarely onto the young receiver. If he cannot seize the opportunity now, Roethlisberger suggested, it may be a clearer indication of how the organization truly views him moving forward.

If Wilson responds, however, the Steelers could discover another offensive contributor at the most critical point of the season — turning an unexpected setback into a surprise advantage.
