Will Barcelona goalkeeper Joan Garcia get a World Cup 2026 call-up from Spain?

Luis de la Fuente has had his say.

Joan Garcia has been a real hit at Barcelona since moving from Espanyol in the summer which has led to calls he could be called up to Spain’s World Cup 2026 squad.

The problem for Garcia is that Spain hardly lack for goalkeeping options, meaning competition for the No. 1 is already very fierce.

Manager Luis de la Fuente has been asked about the situation again and shared his thoughts.

“We have five or six of the best goalkeepers in the world, but nobody talks about Robert Sánchez or Leo Román. And Joan Garcia, obviously. We have fantastic goalkeepers in Spain, fantasti,” he told AS.

“It’s true that right now we’re focusing on these three and we’re delighted with Unai (Simón), David (Raya), and Álex (Remiro), but we’ll see what happens between now and March, or what will happen between now and June, God knows.

“Let’s stay calm. At that point, we’ll have to make the necessary decision. Some people will like it more than others. Whatever decision I make, I’ll be convinced it’s the best one.”

Garcia still has a little more time to try and convince De la Fuente of his qualities ahead of a World Cup campaign that will see La Roja face Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay in the group phase.
