Jake Retzlaff has found a new home.
Former BYU QB Jake Retzlaff Finds Last Minute Landing Spot Before College Football Season originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Just days after it was reported that teams were deterred from going after Jake Retzlaff due to how close the start of the season is, the former BYU Cougars quarterback has found a place to call home.
Following a season that saw him lead the Cougars to an 11-2 record and earn All-Big 12 Honorable Mention, Retzlaff's future in Provo got extremely murky during the offseason. Before the case was dismissed on June 30, Retzlaff was accused of raping a woman.
While he didn't get into any legal trouble, he did openly admit to violating BYU's honor code by having premarital sex. Had he stayed at BYU, he would have been suspended for seven games.
On Monday, ESPN's Pete Thamel reported that Retzlaff will be transferring to join the Tulane Green Wave.
"Former BYU quarterback Jake Retzlaff is verbally committed to Tulane, per ESPN sources," wrote Thamel.
Thamel reported that Tulane spent over a week looking into Retzlaff's situation, and clearly they felt it was OK to bring him in. Retzlaff completed 213 of 368 passes for 2,947 yards, 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions for the Cougars last season. He rushed for another 417 yards and six touchdowns.
The Green Wave has had a complicated situation at quarterback, as they took in Western Kentucky Hilltoppers transfer TJ Finley, but he ended up leaving the program after being arrested. They have also taken in another three transfers, but as pointed out by Thamel, none of them was enrolled in January.
In what is his final season of college football, Retzlaff will look to help Tulane improve upon its 9-5 finish in 2024. He may have an uphill battle when it comes to starting right away, but there is clearly a path to the field in New Orleans.
