Kalani Sitake announced Monday that Big 12 offensive player of the year LJ Martin will miss the Pop-Tarts bowl Saturday after recently undergoing shoulder surgery. Martin had surgery after injuring his shoulder in the Iowa State game; he played in BYU’s five games after that.
Martin was one of the best running backs in college football this season, rushing for 1305 yards and TDs to go along with 36 receptions and 255 receiving yards. Kalani also mentioned that LJ is deciding between entering the NFL Draft or returning to BYU for his senior year.
BYU will also be without backup Sione Moa, meaning BYU will rely on three young running backs. BYU’s depth chart lists Enoch Nawahine, Jovesa Damuni, and Preston Rex as co-starters. The three players combined have rushed for 143 rushing yards.
Even after the news of LJ, BYU remains a four-point favorite over Georgia Tech. The game kicks off Saturday at 3:30 ET on ABC.
