There was surprise internally at Chelsea over Enzo Maresca playing Malo Gusto in the number ten position against Atalanta according to Matt Law.

The Blues lost 2-1 in the Champions League in Italy earlier this month, which extended Chelsea’s winless run to four games.

The Italian has found himself in the headlines recently, and Maresca reportedly has an internal issue at Chelsea, which is believed to stem from what he feels is a lack of support internally.

All of this stemmed from his comments after the win against Everton, in which he said he’d had his worst 48 hours since joining the club.

Maresca was subsequently linked to the Manchester City job a few days later, although he insisted he’ll be Chelsea boss next season ahead of last weekend’s draw with Newcastle.

It’s unlikely to be the last we hear about Maresca’s future and tensions behind the scenes, but Law has revealed a decision which caused surprise internally.

“He [Maresca] had received criticism for putting Gusto into the ten position against Atalanta,” he told The London is Blue Podcast.

“I put it in my report actually; I criticised him for it. I think there was a little bit of surprise internally over that as well.”

Chelsea face tough Aston Villa test

It’s important any issues behind the scenes don’t impact performances on the pitch, and Chelsea are currently unbeaten in their last three in all competitions.

Chelsea staged an impressive comeback from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Newcastle, and will be looking to take that momentum into Saturday’s game with Aston Villa.

Villa have won ten games in a row in all competitions, and are very much the league’s form side, but Chelsea will hope to be boosted by the return of both Liam Delap and Estevao, who have been sidelined with injury.
