The Liverpool winger left it late
Egypt went into stoppage time drawing 1-1 against Zimbabwe in the two nations’ Africa Cup of Nations opener. Egypt deserved a win having managed over three times the shots and shots on target versus their opponents, but seemed likely to settle for a draw.
In the first minute of stoppage time, however, Egyptian captain Mohamed Salah made up for his three off-target efforts and slotted the important one. Salah was also a bit unlucky to have not recorded an assist on the night, having created three big chances.
While his future is perhaps uncertain at Liverpool, it’s nonetheless a welcome sight to see the Egyptian follow up a good performance against Brighton with a very solid one with his international side, a context where he’s previously underwhelmed us at times. While the blow-up was dramatic, could it perhaps have helped him get over what was holding him back? He certainly looks to be playing with hunger again.
