Florida State football offseason evaluation: Quarterback

Did the Seminoles improve at the quarterback position? What to expect for the 2026 season

2025 has come and gone for Florida State football and though there was improvement in the overall record, the results still fell short of Seminole expectations. With next season make-or-break for head coach Mike Norvell, how he and his staff navigate the roster could save his job or end his embattled tenure in Tallahassee. How did each position group do last season and what does the future look like?

A year removed from fielding one of the worst offenses in college football, Florida State once again turned to the transfer portal for the quarterback position in 2025. After the disaster of the 2024 season, FSU quickly added Tommy Castellanos from Boston College. Florida State was Castellanos’ third school and offered a reunion with Gus Malzahn. So how did quarterback play compare to last season?

FSU quarterback performance: 2024 vs. 2025 comparison

2025: Tommy Castellanos

  • PFF Grades: 86.9 overall, 87.2 passing
  • Passing stats: 2,760 yards, 15 touchdowns, 9 interceptions
  • Rushing stats: 557 yards, 9 touchdowns

2024: DJ Uiagalelei, Brock Glenn, Luke Kromenhoek

  • PFF Grades (average): 62.5 overall, 60.3 passing
  • Passing stats (combined): 2,164, 7 touchdowns, 10 interceptions
  • Rushing stats (combined): 148 yards, 1 touchdown

While the numbers and results were an improvement over 2024, the quarterback play left more to be desired. The inability of Castellanos to take the “easy” throws, along with inconsistent running back usage, caused an “improving” offense to stall out when it mattered most.

2026 quarterback recruiting

The Seminoles signed Jaden O’Neal for the #Tribe26 class — from our own NoleThruandThru:

O’Neal has great arm strength and takes good care of the football, throwing 29 touchdowns against only three interceptions this season. But he isn’t an ideal fit for what Gus Malzahn likes to do with mobile quarterbacks, so it’ll be interesting to see how adaptable the staff is, or how long O’Neal sticks in Tallahassee.

2026 current depth

  • Redshirt junior Brock Glenn
    • Career stats: 76 of 175 for 895 yards, 6 touchdowns, 7 interceptions
  • Redshirt freshman Kevin Sperry
    • Career stats: 12 of 17 for 194 yards, 2 touchdowns

2026 outlook

The Seminoles have already been linked to multiple names in the portal at the quarterback position. Additionally, FSU failed to provide Kevin Sperry significant opportunities this season (17 total attempts) and unfortunately has consistently eroded the confidence of Brock Glenn. The expectation is that Florida State will be adding an experienced quarterback via the transfer portal to lead the 2026 team.
