Women’s Basketball: Miles and Suarez set NCAA history with triple-doubles

Miles and Suarez became the first teammates to have triple-doubles against a D1 opponent

TCU Women’s Basketball completed an undefeated non-conference schedule with a blowout 109-54 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff this past Tuesday in Fort Worth. TCU took a commanding lead in the first quarter and never looked back, scoring at least 24 points in all four quarters in an outstanding offensive performance. The Frogs have dominated their non-conference opponents, winning every game by double-digit points and eight games by at least 30 points.

Olivia Miles entered the history books once again becoming only the third player in NCAA history to record triple-doubles in three straight games finishing with an outstanding stat line of 25 points, ten rebounds, 11 assists, three steals, and one block. Miles was incredibly efficient in her scoring as well, knocking down eight of ten shots from the field, two of two attempts from three, and seven of eight attempts from the free throw line. Miles was not the only Frog a part of history on Tuesday, however, as Marta Suarez also recorded a triple-double. Suarez and Miles are the first pair of teammates in NCAA history to record triple-doubles in the same game against a Division One opponent. Suarez finished with 20 points, ten rebounds, ten assists, one steal, and one block on 58% shooting from the field. Miles and Suarez have both been excellent for the Frogs this season on both sides of the floor and are forming one of the most formidable one-two punches in the nation.

It was not just Miles and Suarez with great games against the Golden Lions, all five starters scored in double figures. Donovyn Hunter had a very solid shooting night, making eight of ten attempts from the field on her way to 18 points, three rebounds, and three assists. Hunter has done a great job, filling multiple roles as a ball handler and a primary on-ball defender as well as providing an excellent scoring punch when needed. Clara Silva scored in double figures for the second straight game with 14 points, seven rebounds, and one assist. Maddie Scherr missed the game against UAPB but is expected to return against Kansas State. Taylor Bigby started in her absence and played well, scoring ten points with one rebound, two assists, and three steals. The Frogs’ bench also contributed to the win as Kennedy Basham scored seven points and collected six rebounds while providing solid rim protection on the other side of the floor. Veronica Sheffey was a solid contributor with eight points, three rebounds, and one assist.

The Frogs had a complete offensive performance, knocking down 63% of their shots from the field and 44% of their shots from three. TCU did a great job drawing contact and getting to the free throw line with 24 attempts at the line as a team. Furthermore, the Frogs had excellent ball movement, tallying 29 assists as a team compared to just 10 total turnovers. TCU dominated on the boards, outrebounding the Golden Lions 52-18; the Frogs were clearly the better team in all facets of the game on Tuesday.

The Frogs will kick off Big 12 conference play against the Kansas State Wildcats on Saturday at 4:00 pm in Fort Worth. The Wildcats handed TCU one of just two total conference losses last season as TCU has a chance to start off Big 12 play with a win over a strong program.
