Spain's European Championship winner Marc Cucurella said he was extremely nervous during Chelsea's Club World Cup trophy ceremony because of the unexpected behaviour of US President Donald Trump.
In a recorded conversation with Spanish journalist Gerard Romero, Cucurella recalled that players were instructed not to lift the trophy until Trump, who was set to present it, had left the stage.
However, the US president remained on stage longer than expected and encouraged the players to proceed regardless.
Cucurella, who became widely known in Germany during Euro 2024 last summer for a controversial handball incident in the semi-final against the German team, said the team hesitated, unsure how to react. He admitted feeling anxious and joked that in such situations, one might even worry about being taken out by a sniper.
Trump handed the trophy to Chelsea captain Reece James but, contrary to standard protocol, stayed among the celebrating players instead of stepping aside. Chelsea defeated Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 in the final of the revamped Club World Cup.
