Some ill-advised chirping from the Aggies paid off for Miami.
Why?
Why would you do that, Trey Zuhn III? What were you thinking Rueben Owens II?
Those two gentlemen very firmly messed with the bull in the two weeks leading up to the first-round playoff clash between Miami and Texas A&M. And, in the most unsurprising news of all time, they got the horns. Bain took notice and used it to fuel a three-sack performance in a 10-3 Miami win at Kyle Field on Saturday.
Bain admitted after the contest that he kept receipts on this, noting he kept a tweet with comments on his iPhone leading up to the game.
“Well, first, like I said before, I don’t take kindly to disrespect,” Bain said during the postgame press conference. “A little reminder on my phone. All two weeks, the last two weeks, I was ready to play some football. Some guys in the media said some things they shouldn’t have said, but, you know they did, so God bless them. Just writing checks they can’t cash.”
For those who didn’t know, Zuhn, A&M’s starting left tackle, said on selection Sunday of the challenge of facing Bain: ““I don’t think he’ll be a threat that we need to worry about too much.” Owens added about Miami’s run defense: “I wouldn’t say it’s much of a challenge,” Owens said. “I know my guys. They’re ready for the challenge. It’s been like that a couple of games. The Mizzou game. They said they had a good run defense. We put up over 200 rushing yards. So, I just feel that once we just align, do our assignment, put the effort in, we’ll get the job done.”
The end result seven sacks by the Canes’ defense, two interceptions, and 89 rushing yards on 35 carries. You won’t see many defenses put up that strong of a performance in the College Football Playoff. Like, almost never. And it’s clear Bain and the Canes hit an extra gear on Saturday, and the comments from A&M’s players added a little bit of fuel for the performance.
Mike Elko and all other coaches should take note and kindly encourage their players from spreading stupidity going forward. Miami fans are very thankful for it today.
