As Fabrizio Romano reported earlier this week, Manchester City are awaiting a bid from Galatasaray for goalkeeper Ederson. Given the fact that Ederson could leave City, a host of goalkeepers have been named as potential transfer targets for the club. But despite the fact that City continue to be linked with other keepers it is obvious that Manchester City are all in on James Trafford being their next number-one goalkeeper. That fact does stand out despite new links emerging linking City with a move for PSG’s phenomenal keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Manchester City have been linked with a move for Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Graeme Bailey has reported for TBR Football that Manchester City ‘engaged’ in talks to potentially sign Gianluigi Donnarumma. The PSG goalkeeper is considering his future at PSG as per Bailey’s report. Furthermore, Graeme Bailey reports that Donnarumma only has twelve months remaining on his current contract. Bailey adds that Chelsea, Galatasaray, AC Milan and Bayern Munich all maintain an interest in signing Donnarumma if he does leave PSG this summer.
Despite the Donnarumma links it seems that Manchester City are all in on James Trafford.
Until Ederson’s future is clarified, it isn’t a surprise to see Manchester City linked with nearly every available goalkeeper. If Ederson leaves City will obviously need a new number-one goalkeeper. But it would appear that City have made their choice. That is Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford. That has appeared to be obvious all week.
To further validate this fact, Tyrone Marshall reports for Manchester Evening News that City have no interest in signing FC Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa. Furthermore, Marshall reports that James Trafford is keen to return to the Etihad. Lastly, Marshall reports that City’s move for Trafford is dependent on Ederson signing for Galatasaray.
James Trafford would not return to Manchester City to be a backup keeper. At 22 years of age, he is entering the prime years of his career. Trafford’s goal is to become Manchester City’s number-one goalkeeper. If he does return to the club this summer he is every chance of fulfilling that goal. There is no chance that Trafford will come to City if they sign Gianluigi Donnarumma for example. That move would be counter productive for Trafford’s progress as a player.
So while Pep Guardiola’s side continues to be linked with goalkeepers such as Gianluigi Donnarumma they have seemingly made their choice as to who will replace Ederson. That is James Trafford. Barring something drastic occuring that is unlikely to change.
