Following Real Madrid’s 2–0 victory over Sevilla at the Santiago Bernabéu, Thibaut Courtois spoke to the media about the result, his performance, the team’s level of play, Kylian Mbappé, and his experience at the stadium.
Importance of the Win and Areas to Improve
Courtois emphasized the importance of securing a home victory, while acknowledging that the team must improve its overall performance.
“The important thing was to win at home, but I think we need to improve our football.”
“We won with a set piece and a penalty; we know we have to improve, but in moments like these, it’s important to win.”
“We need to improve in 2026; the week off will do us good. There are injuries and such, which is why the victory is so important.”
Performance and Goalkeeping Form
Asked about his own performance, Courtois said he is feeling good and credited his daily work with the goalkeeping staff.
“I feel good, I work hard every day with Llopis and the goalkeepers.”
“At 1–0 I made several saves, that’s my job.”
Comments on Kylian Mbappé
Courtois also spoke about Kylian Mbappé and his impact on the team, praising his motivation and quality.
“It’s very impressive. He’s a very motivated guy, who is leading the attack with Vini, Rodrygo and everyone else.”
“Scoring 59 goals isn’t easy. He has quality and talent, it’s difficult to stop him in training. I try, and we get competitive, but training with the best in the world makes you better.”
Looking Ahead to 2026
Courtois made it clear that the team’s ambitions remain focused on winning trophies, but that improvement is required.
“That 2026 comes with trophies, but for that we have to improve our level.”
Playing at the Bernabéu and Captaincy
Reflecting on the occasion, Courtois described playing at the Santiago Bernabéu as a special moment in his career.
“It was my first time at the Bernabéu, it’s a childhood dream to play here.”
“Being one of the captains is a tremendous honor. Coming from a small town in Belgium, this shows that you have to dream big.”
