Hot-shooting Monroe can't keep Summerfield girls from 6-0 start

Summerfield girls hot off Monroe for 6-0 basketball start while Bedford clips Milan boys to even record at 4-4.

MONROE – Summerfield’s girls basketball team will take a perfect record into the Christmas break.

The Bulldogs rolled their record to 6-0 with a 51-41 win over Monroe on Saturday, Dec. 20.

“We played a really good first half on defense and executed well on offense,” Summerfield coach Mickey Moody said. “In the second half we stopped rotating on defense and Monroe made us pay by knocking down 3s.”

Makenzie Wolfe played what Moody called “her best game of the year” with 16 points.

Jaeli Jones added 11 points and Mayley Mannebach 10 for Summerfield.

“I’m happy with the start of season and we know that we have not come close yet to playing our best basketball,” Moody said. “We are excited for Christmas break so we can rest up and come back with everyone feeling rested.”

Makenna Kansier shot Monroe (1-4) back into the game with 13 of her 16 points and three of her four 3- pointers in the third quarter.

“Kansier for Monroe was lights out,” Moody said. “We didn’t panic when they cut our 15-point lead down to 2. We did a nice job in the fourth quarter to preserve the win.”

BOYS BASKETBALL

Bedford roars back

TEMPERANCE – Bedford rallied after trailing by 5 points at halftime to earn a 49-45 win over Milan Saturday.

“We played excellent defense in the third quarter, holding them to 6 points,” Bedford coach Nick Brillhart said. “Proud of how tough we played defensively in the second half.’

Bedford (4-4) scored 13 points in the third quarter to grab the lead.

Henry Albring and Ish Hakki led the Mules with 10 points each while Corbin Miller finished with 8 points and 8 rebounds, and Nick Coberley and Payton Sheaves also chipped in 8 points each.

Zach Farmer of Milan led all scorers with 18 points. Landon Talladay added 12 for the 1-6 Big Reds.

PREP WRESTLING

Bears take second place

ADDISON – Cody O'Hern (106), Sawyer Schaffer (132) and Karson Petit (157) won all five of their matches as Jefferson took second place in the Fred Boss Memorial Duals Saturday.

The Bears went 4-1 with wins over Onsted 50-30, Quincy 57-20, Hillsdale 55-28 and Coloma 48-35. Their lone loss was a tight 39-36 decision against Jackson North West.

Dino Gessner (113), Morgan Simota (120) and Devin Early (190) won four matches each.

PREP SWIMMMING

Brewer, Hess second

WOODHAVEN – David Mills and Jared Tunison both won two individual events for Erie Mason-Ida in the Woodhaven Warrior Relays Saturday.

Mills took the 200 (1:49.66) and 500 (5:01.32) freestyles and Tunison ruled the individual medley (2:07.95) and breaststroke (1:05.29).

Mills was part of the winning 200 and 400 relays. Tunison swam a leg o0n the 400. Other relay members were Tanner Heiden, Robert Otting, Mason Reynolds, Nelson Brenner and Brandon Tross

Mason-Ida just missed the team title with 403 points. Riverview won with 419.

JR Hess took runner-up honors in the 500 freestyle and third in the backstroke for Dundee and Aaron Brewer and Kylor Freshour went 2-3 in diving.
