The US Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) has de facto banned trans women from participating in Olympic sports.
The USOPC published an updated version of the "Athlete Safety Policy," dated July 18, on its website on Monday.
The 27-page USOPC document does not mention the word "transgender," but it states that the committee would continue to work with other bodies "to ensure that women have a fair and safe competition environment consistent with Executive Order 14201."
The order in question was issued by US President Donald Trump in February and is titled "Keeping Men Out of Women's Sports."
Under the order, educational institutions, which play a central role as the main pathway into professional sports, face the withdrawal of federal funding if they allow transgender athletes to compete on teams that do not match the sex they were assigned at birth.
The executive order also tasked US Secretary of State Marco Rubio with getting the International Olympic Committee to amend "the standards governing Olympic sporting events to promote fairness, safety, and the best interests of female athletes" using "all appropriate and available measures."
The next Summer Olympics will be held in Los Angeles in 2028.
