Former Colts safety Julian Blackmon has found a new home.

The New Orleans Saints and Blackmon reached a deal Tuesday night, a move made following Tyann Mathieu announcing his surprise retirement

The Layton, Utah native was selected in the 3rd round of the 2020 NFL Draft by Indianapolis, quickly becoming a fixture of the secondary. In 66 games, the 26-year-old logged 300 total tackles, 21 passes defended and 10 interceptions.

Blackmon battled his fair share of injuries throughout his five years in Indianapolis, including the shoulder injury he played through which ultimately caused Indy to move on. He initially hit free agency the previous March in 2024, but returned to the Colts on a team-friendly one-year extension worth $3.7 million after not getting much interest.

The Saints already have some young talent at safety, drafting Jonas Sanker in the third round this past April out of Virginia, who joins 2023 fifth-round pick Jordan Howden. New Orelans also signed veteran Justin Reid to a three-year, $31.5 million contract in free agency.

So, even if Blackmon seems like a shoe-in to make the Saints’ roster, he will have some competition in training camp, his first camp outside of Indianapolis, for playing time.
