Montverde Academy’s Steve Turner earns 500th career win

On Day 1 of the City of Palms Classic in Fort Myers, Florida, Montverde Academy (Fla.) head coach Steve Turner reached a milestone in his high school boys basketball coaching career.

Turner on Thursday earned his the 500th win of his illustrious high school basketball coaching career as the Montverde Academy Eagles defeated Gillion Academy, 67-61.

The Eagles under the first-year head coach for the Eagles have a loaded roster, which includes four-star power forwards Lincoln Cosby, Joe Philon and Gibbs transfer Oneal Delancy. Expectations to remain in contention for a national championship continue under Turner, who brings over plenty of experience from his time coaching at Gonzaga (D.C.).

Turner spent 20 years as the head coach at Gonzaga, which dated back to the 2004 campaign. Before that, Turner was an assistant at Gonzaga for six years. During his 20 years in the nation’s capital, Turner had amassed a record of 497-176 and turned Gonzaga into one of the East Coast’s top high school basketball programs in the country.

“It is with deep appreciation and utmost respect for this amazing community that I share this news. At the end of the 2024-25 basketball season, I was offered an opportunity to take my career to a new level as the next Head Coach of the Boys Varsity National Basketball team at Montverde Academy in Florida,” Turner had said in an announcement on Twitter when he accepted the Montverde Academy position. “I have decided to accept the offer. Although this opportunity presented itself quickly, I did not make my decision lightly.”
