German Olympic champion Vinzenz Geiger sent a strong signal at the year-end Nordic combined World Cup event in Austria's Ramsau am Dachstein on Saturday, surging from 15th after the ski jump to win following the cross-country skiing.

After 10 kilometres, the 28-year-old prevailed in a gripping sprint ahead of Norway's Jens Lurås Oftebro and Austria's Johannes Lamparter. His margin over Oftebro was a tiny 0.1 seconds.

Geiger had missed the start of the season through injury but a first German men's win of the campaign came just a month and half before the Winter Olympics in Italy.

In women's ski jumping, Japan's Nozomi Maruyama won for a fifth time this season on the women's large hill from twice defending World Cup champion Nika Prevc, who led after the first jump. Norway's Anna Odine Strøm was third.
