Anthony Joshua knocks out Jake Paul in sixth round

Paul vs. Joshua took place Dec. 19 at the Kaseya Center in Miami, Fla. Jake Paul (12-2) and Anthony Joshua (29-4) squared off in the main event. The fight aired live on Netflix.

Round 1:

Paul immediately circling away from Joshua. Smart. He is staying beyond jab range. Paul actually goes in for a body shot and nearly eats a counter punch for his troubles. Right hand from Paul actually connects. Awkward clinch from Paul as he grabs Joshua and just falls into the ropes. Pulling guard, Jakey? Paul jabs the body. Joshua lets a right go, but it’s short. He catches Paul with one, but Paul ducks out of there. Wait… Round 1 to Paul?

Round 2:

Paul with a light tag to the body. Joshua more aggressive here. He misses on a big right. Good jab from Joshua. Joshua to the body. More jabs from Joshua, but Paul is on his bicycle right now. Paul to the body, he gets in and out. Good left from Joshua. Lots of clinching, not much volume. Another good jab from Joshua.

Round 3:

Joshua immediately works to cut off the ring. Paul lunges in and goes right to the clinch. Joshua shrugs him off and attacks with a left hook. Short right scores for Joshua. Paul bouncing around in there, Joshua times a right well and scores. Paul nearly tripping along the ropes as he circles out of danger. Short uppercut inside from Paul. Jab from Paul right into the clinch. Referee letting them work. Joshua with a couple of jabs. He’s letting the right go, but he’s not setting it up. Paul initiates another clinch. Dreary business.

Round 4:

Good jab from Joshua to start. Paul with another wild clinch, borderline tackle. Crowd didn’t like that. Overhand right from Paul scored, then a jab. Oh, Joshua, what are you doing? Paul with another awkward clinch and the referee warns him to cut it out. Paul leaning on the ropes, wanting Joshua to come to him. Joshua with a couple of jabs and then a right that doesn’t come close. Paul slips to the floor. Finally, Joshua lands a good shot with an uppercut inside. Paul just drops to the floor out of nowhere, like he’s breakdance fighting. We’ve got a pause here as it looks like Paul might have taken a low shot during that weirdness. Replay makes it look like Paul pulled Joshua down onto him. Whatever. Thirty seconds left in the round. Paul with a jab to the body, then a left hook. Paul to his knees again. Referee warns them both. Not sure what Joshua is being blamed for.

Round 5:

Paul immediately goes to clinch. Joshua hits Paul with an uppercut. Paul takes it, but soon after goes to his knees again to get another breather. How is this in any way legal? Paul lands a left hand. Jab from Joshua as Paul misses wide. Joshua rips the body. He’s opening Paul up. Left hand from Joshua and Paul looks a little shaky, might be a leg issue? Referee has seen enough and he ruled a knockdown after an unclear exchange. Right counter sends Paul running. Another right hand and Paul goes to his knee, have to score that one a knockdown. He answers the count, but has to survive another 45 seconds of this. Commentary reminds us there is no three-knockdown rule for the main event. They trade rights, Joshua definitely got hit there. Joshua with a right, he’s battering Paul in the corner, but Paul escapes another round.

Round 6:

Joshua letting the hands go now. This doesn’t look good for Paul who looks hurt and gassed. Paul right to his knees after a glancing shot from Joshua and that’s our third knockdown of the fight. He says he wants to continue. Joshua stalks him. Right hand lands for Joshua. He’s unleashing now. Paul sticks his tongue out, ever the showman. Probably not a good idea right now. Joshua swarming him. Straight right and Paul is down. He’s slow to get up and thankfully the referee has seen enough. Merciful ending.
