Dortmund have won 19 of their last 20 home games against mid-table Gladbach, who had their chances but suffered a second straight defeat after five previous unbeaten matches of which they won four.
Dortmund moved past RB Leipzig and are six points behind leaders Bayern Munich. Leipzig can reclaim second with victory in Saturday's top match against Bayer Leverkusen, while Munich are at lowly Heidenheim on Sunday.
