The voices have gotten louder from administrators, coaches and fans alike when it comes to public and private schools competing against one another from a athletic championships competition standpoint. One state is exploring the option of splitting them up once the postseason rolls around is that of Alabama.
According to a report by the Montgomery Advertiser, the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) has looked into the possibilities of splitting up private and public schools when it comes to postseason championship competition.
Per the report, the AHSAA have looked into an option that would place all private schools in their own postseason bracket, removing them from playing public schools in the playoffs. The Montgomery-based association has moved its reclassification meeting back a month as they continue to research the possibility of separating private and public schools come state series championships competition time.
This comes on the heels of growing dissension between AHSAA independent and public schools on the argument of advantages that private schools have when it comes to resources and competitiveness. According to the report and the Montgomery Advertiser speaking to private school athletic directors granted anonymity, the hopes are the classifications remain the same despite the growing noise for change around the Yellowhammer State.
“I hope that we do stay simply because it gives us a broader field of schools to play against,” an anonymous athletics director at a Alabama private school said to the Montgomery Advertiser. “While private schools have multiplier and competitive balance put forth by the state, that hasn’t deterred any private schools from joining the AHSAA.”
When it comes to the biggest conversation starter that is high school football, of the seven classifications that had championship games, of the 14 teams that competed just three were independent/private schools. Two of them won state championships in Mars Hill Bible and Coosa Christian, respectively.
