Red Sox could cut ties with All-Star outfielder, per MLB insider

As the trade deadline grows closer, the Boston Red Sox may part ways with one of their fan favorite players.

The Boston Red Sox ended the first half of the season on a ten-game win streak heading into the All-Star break, and now hold the third Wild Card playoff spot.

Boston hit its stride right before the All-Star break, but now has one of the hardest remaining schedules in the league. Despite losing three of their last four games, the Red Sox will need to add pitching at the trade deadline if they want to make a playoff push.

One of the Red Sox players whose name keeps being mentioned in potential trades is Jarren Duran. MLB.com's Mark Feinsand called Duran the "best player available" at the outfield position and believes that there is a medium amount of buzz around a potential trade as the trade deadline grows closer.

"One year ago, Duran had just played in his first All-Star Game and was on his way to a breakout season that saw him lead the Majors in doubles and triples while posting an .834 OPS and 6.8 fWAR," Feinsand wrote. "Although Duran has performed well this year, he hasn’t been able to replicate his success from 2024. But he’s still as durable as they come (he plays every day and leads the AL in plate appearances), hits the ball hard (88th percentile in exit velocity) and is one of the fastest players in the game."

"The Red Sox don’t have a pressing need to trade Duran, who is under club control through 2028, but with a trio of young outfielders (Roman Anthony, Ceddanne Rafaela, Wilyer Abreu) in place to carry the load, Duran may be Boston’s best trade chip to add controllable pitching."

Duran is a one-time All-Star who has spent his entire career, spanning five seasons, in Boston. The 28-year-old outfielder is currently on a one-year, $3.85 million contract, but is under team control through the 2028 season, according to Spotrac.

The Red Sox have a lot of talented outfielders, and Duran is likely to command a larger contract than the others. Though he's a fan-favorite in Boston, there remains the chance that the team parts ways with him to bring in a solid pitcher.
