Some bad transfer portal news for North Carolina could make Bill Belichick reconsider this whole college football thing and look into the head coach opening with the New York Giants.

UNC had very high hopes when they were able to convince NFL legend Bill Belichick to bring his talent and brand to their football program. However, as his tenure played out, the marriage between the school and the New England Patriots icon became a nightmare.

Beyond just the rumors about being ill-equipped to run a college football program in 2025, and the spotlight created by his heavily involved, far younger girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, the Tar Heels simply weren’t very good on the field. Despite a football genius overseeing the team, UNC finished with a sad 4-8 record in Belichick’s debut season.

There has been speculation for weeks that he could pull the plug on his time in college football and try to return to the coaching ranks in the NFL. However, he has quelled that speculation several times this season, including after recent rumors linked him to the head coach opening for the team he has always had a sweet spot for, the NY Giants.

However, some bad news for the team on Wednesday could make him rethink that stance. According to 247 Sports, star linebacker Tyler Thompson intends to end the transfer portal, which opens on Jan. 2.

His departure is a big one for the program. The sophomore could have left before the season. However, he chose to stick around and work with the NFL legend. Well, it seems a year under Belichick was enough, and he will be available to the highest bidder in the portal.

Thompson had a breakthrough season for the Tar Heels. Finishing fourth in the ACC in sacks (7), and was the highest-graded player on the team on Pro Football Focus with an 85.0. Furthermore, he is a North Carolina native. Belichick not being able to keep an in-state star is a very bad sign for his reputation.

It is certainly another big piece of evidence that he is not a good fit for college football, and if a team like the NY Giants has any interest at all in bringing the one-time defensive coordinator back as their head coach, he should consider the opportunity, or seek it out.
