Fuchs calls on Newport players to win over critics

Manager Christian Fuchs says he believes his squad has the ability to maintain their Football League status.

Manager Christian Fuchs has challenged his Newport County players to win over their critics as they fight relegation from League Two.

At a fans forum attended by owner Huw Jenkins, some supporters accused the club of not having sufficient quality in the squad to avoid a drop into the National League.

County are rock bottom of the English Football League (EFL), five points from safety after 20 games.

Fuchs, who was appointed in November, insists his players have the ability to change opinions.

"That's our responsibility, to turn them around," said Fuchs.

"I think that is what everybody wants from Newport, for our club to be successful, and I think it's more than fair for people to be critical when things don't go the way they want it to be, the way probably people expect it to be.

"It's our responsibility to show them what we are capable of doing and it's then pulling into the same direction.

"Once they see that something is happening, that it's not only good performances but those performances are converted into results."

Fuchs is still seeking his first win as Newport boss, having drawn two and lost two of four League games, while also bowing out of the FA Cup 3-0 at National League Boreham Wood.

The Exiles most recent game was a 2-0 home defeat by Fleetwood Town.

"I just have a big appeal to the fans to to support us, to trust that something is happening here, that the players are all bought-in, that they want to make this happen and it takes everybody.

"It takes the Amber Army to push us forward every single game and if something doesn't work out, okay, fine. I'm happy for feedback.

"But those players that will be on the pitch, they will fight for Newport and make sure that we've turned things around."

Chairman Jenkins has also revealed that hopes of bringing fresh investment to the club have hit a stumbling block.

However, Fuchs remains positive that will not dramatically affect his transfer plans during the January window.

"We're in conversations," Fuchs added.

"We have identified some targets and now we're working on getting those onboard that will help us in the second part of the season.

"Refresh it a little bit, to bring new competition in for everybody to maybe give them another another five ten percent more, but again with the team that we have right now I'm confident.

"If we can get those couple of players in, that would definitely help."
