Former Premier League striker Clinton Morrison says Newcastle showed an "outstanding" response to derby defeat at Sunderland by beating Fulham to reach the Carabao Cup semi-finals.

"It's a massive result for Eddie Howe after the disappointment of the weekend," Morrison told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast.

"Newcastle want to win another cup this season, being the Carabao Cup holders.

"It was a big result for them and a big performance, especially in that second half.

"In the first half they were a bit nervy but after the break they were outstanding and thoroughly deserved the win.

"You want a response after a disappointing performance so credit to the players and staff for their reaction."

Yoane Wissa's first goal for the club opened the scoring but Fulham equalised quickly through Sasa Lukic.

The game looked destined for penalties before 19-year-old midfielder Lewis Miley - starting at right-back - popped up to head home a late corner.

"He is a special player," Morrison added. "He can adapt and play right-back as well as midfield and he's got a big presence about him. You don't realise how big he is until you watch him live.

"It's a fantastic header. I think he's trying to flick it back into a dangerous area but he managed to get it into that far corner.

"I thought he was comfortable in possession. Good players can play anywhere and he is certainly a good player."
