In a bit of a surprise, the Jets and tight end Jeremy Ruckert have agreed to a two year contract extension.
Ruckert was picked by the Jets in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft.
In his four years career, Ruckert’s contributions has been minimal. His first two seasons, he struggled to get ahead of CJ Uzomah on the depth chart. In 2025 there wasn’t much standing between Ruckert and the starting job. The only real competition was second round pick Mason Taylor. Taylor has potential, but he is a rookie who is still developing. Still Ruckert has struggled to make a meaningful role.
In his four season career, Ruckert has only 55 receptions for 427 yards and a single touchdown. As a blocker, Ruckert has been inconsistent at best.
Normally I can find some sort of logic behind a Jets move, even when I disagree with it. I have to admit that I’m stumped on this one. With the projected 2026 salary cap around $300 million, a $5 million annual salary isn’t a franchise altering amount to pay a player. Still, a year ago in free agency, only three tight ends were able to secure a multi-year contract with at least a $5 million salary. Even if the Jets were set on keeping Ruckert, it’s unclear why they felt the need to make this sort of investment.
