if you thought Drake’s bets were reckless, meet Hollywood producer Jon Peters.
The former head of Sony Pictures bet $5 million on Jake Paul’s Netflix fight against Anthony Joshua, and is so convinced that “El Gallo” will pull off the upset, Peters even convinced his children to wager separate bets, with a total combined payoff in the neighborhood of $50 million.
Perhaps I was wrong about bettors “going broke.”
“This is my first time I’ve ever bet on anybody in my life, other than myself, because I’ve been watching his career, and he’s like me,” Peters told TMZ Sports. “He’s like a weed that grew into an oak tree. When I talked to Jake on the telephone, and he [said] he would rather die than lose, I wanted to hear that. The other guy, is this just another win? He’s a champion. He’s also seven years, eight years older. I think Jake may knock him out in the first round. I’ve been a fighter my whole life. I know about fighting. I just believe it. And I have my kids betting on it, too. With everybody betting, we could make $50 million.”
Don’t worry, his kids are “all millionaires.”
“I already told [Jake] that I have options on a movie called Bullitt, Steve McQueen movie,” Peters added. “And I’ve been wanting to do it with Brad Pitt, but he’s a little old — and Paul is a movie star. Girls like him, kids like him, people like him. He’s a modern day phenom. But once he wins this, I think he will want to go fight that big, tall guy in England. The shorter guy can punch up easier than a big guy can punch down. When you punch down, you lose your power. When you punch up, you twist your legs, and you snap that punch into the ribs, and you snap that punch into the head, and bang, there you go.”
Hard to imagine this iconic car chase with “El Gallo” behind the wheel.
I don’t know if this qualifies as “suspicious betting activity” but it’s certainly raising a few eyebrows when you consider all the sports-related betting scandals over the last several weeks. With this kind of money in play, it will be hard to dodge allegations of fight fixing if Paul, who was outboxed by Tommy Fury, somehow beats the 28-4 Joshua, a former heavyweight champion with scary knockout power and an Olympic gold medal.
One more reason to tune into Netflix on Friday night, I suppose.
