Former Mavericks starter says he found love for basketball again after leaving Dallas

Dallas isn't the perfect situation for everyone.

The Dallas Mavericks have made some of the most interesting moves over the past few years, but it seems that not every player has enjoyed their time with the franchise.

In 2024, the Mavericks made their first NBA Finals run since winning the title in 2011. After navigating through some tough series in the West against the Oklahoma City Thunder and Minnesota Timberwolves, Dallas’ magical run came to an end against the Boston Celtics.

Although the loss in the Finals certainly hurt, the Mavericks’ run in the West was unforgettable. One of the biggest keys to their success was P.J. Washington, who was particularly great in the second round against the Thunder. Dallas acquired Washington in what was soon praised as one of the best deadline deals in recent memory.

As part of the deal to get Washington, Dallas sent Grant Williams to Charlotte. Williams only spent half a season with the Mavericks, averaging 8.1 points and 3.6 rebounds while starting in 33 of his 47 appearances.

With better seasons in Boston before and Charlotte after, it’s easy to see why Williams might not be fond of his time in Dallas. In a recent appearance on the Off The Record podcast, Williams alluded to that.

“It’s been the most refreshing thing that I could’ve used for the NBA,” Williams said. “I was able to find my love for basketball again in Charlotte.”

There’s no doubt that Williams’ time in Dallas was disappointing for him and the organization. While Williams didn’t specifically say his stint with the Mavericks hurt his love for the game, his time in Boston was filled with great moments and deep playoff runs, so it seems like a simple equation to figure out where that love might have been lost.

In any case, Williams is looking to help the Hornets make their way back to the playoffs while Dallas is gearing up for another interesting season.
