Baltimore Ravens OC Todd Monken must maximize the ability of running backs Justice Hill and Keaton Mitchell.
Surely, the Baltimore Ravens are loaded at nearly every skilled position on the roster. With the team leading the NFL in rushing yards per game last season, it would be senseless to think running back Derrick Henry will be taking the backseat to any successor. However, at the No. 2 position on the depth chart, there may be a dilemma between whether to primarily play running back Justice Hill or alternate his reps with Keaton Mitchell.
Both Mitchell and Hill have suffered gut-wrenching injuries throughout their NFL careers. Yet, both have recovered and will enter the 2025 NFL season ready to kick it into another gear. Both players exhibit an elusive build and possess attributes that enable them to excel on stretch runs, outside zone plays, and toss plays. The quick feet of both Mitchell and Hill can be used in offensive coordinator Todd Monken’s strategy, specifically when deploying misdirection and play-action to get the opposing defense moving laterally.
Ultimately, at age 27, Hill may be the more merited party between the two players. It isn’t as if Hill has skills that surpass Mitchell, but Hill has proven to be the more reliable target out of the backfield, which will be vital to the Ravens' offense. On third-downs, Monken can rely on Hill to be a serviceable pass blocker, and an excellent option for HB screen plays, allowing for quarterback Lamar Jackson to have a check-down option when things get sticky.
Additionally, Mitchell has quick feet and may see reps as an iso back when the Ravens have possession in plus territory. Still, the delegation of reps between the two exceptional running backs will be a dilemma Monken has to navigate throughout 2025.
