Patriots 53-man roster projection heading into 2025 training camp

Projecting the New England Patriots' 53-man roster heading into 2025 training camp.

A few blinks later, suddenly, training camp for the New England Patriots has arrived.

The veteran players are scheduled to arrive on Tuesday, and the team will hold its first official training camp practice on Wednesday. Patriots coach Mike Vrabel will then use the next several weeks to prepare his team for the 2025 season, while also trimming down the roster to 53 players.

With the pads coming on and practice intensifying, we will get a better look at where players on the team stand in terms of their individual development. It's a lengthy and grueling process that includes multiple summer practices, joint team practices and preseason games.

Here is my updated 53-man roster projection ahead of training camp:

Quarterbacks (2): Drake Maye, Joshua Dobbs

Drake Maye looks the part of a future franchise quarterback for New England. He's a smart and athletic playmaker under center with the prototypical size that teams usually look for at the quarterback position. His playmaking ability led him to a Pro Bowl invitation as a rookie, despite having little help on offense.

Make no mistake, the offense still needs more help, but the unit looks better on paper than it did a year ago. That means the Patriots need to see improvement from Maye in Year 2.

Running Backs (4): Rhamondre Stevenson, TreVeyon Henderson, Antonio Gibson, Lan Larison

The Patriots quietly have one of the better running back rooms in the league. Rhamondre Stevenson has proven to be a yard-eater on the ground when motivated, and he should have plenty of motivation with the arrival of rookie TreVeyon Henderson this season. The former Ohio State running back is an electric playmaker as a runner and receiver. He could ultimately serve as a Jahmyr Gibbs-type option on offense for New England.

Tight Ends (3): Hunter Henry, Austin Hooper, Brock Lampe

Hunter Henry developed a strong connection with Drake Maye last season, and Austin Hooper was another reliable veteran pass-catcher on offense. The Patriots could keep either Jaheim Bell or rookie tight end CJ Dippre as the third option. However, I think it's more likely they use that spot for rookie fullback Brock Lampe, while stashing either Bell or Dippre on the practice squad.

Wide Receivers (7): Stefon Diggs, Kyle Williams, Demario Douglas, Kendrick Bourne, Mack Hollins, Kayshon Boutte, Efton Chism III

There are still reasons to be concerned with the wide receiver situation in New England, but there are also reasons for optimism. When healthy, Stefon Diggs has proven to be one of the most consistent playmakers in the NFL, and rookie Kyle Williams has tremendous promise at the next level. Demario Douglas should also do wonders in Josh McDaniels' offense, while Kayshon Boutte and Kendrick Bourne offer solid veteran additions.

There's also serious interest in rookie Efton Chism III and the second-year development of Ja'Lynn Polk and Javon Baker. If there's one position to watch for the Patriots at training camp, it would be the wide receiver position.

Offensive line (9): Will Campbell, Morgan Moses, Mike Onwenu, Caedan Wallace, Cole Strange, Vederian Lowe, Jared Wilson, Garrett Bradbury, Jack Conley

None of the offensive changes made by New England in the offseason will mean much if the offensive line continues to be a problem. They went all in on fixing the issue by using a first-round draft pick on rookie left tackle Will Campbell and a third-rounder on center Jared Wilson.

The team also signed veteran right tackle Morgan Moses and center Garrett Bradbury in free agency. Things are far from perfect along the offensive front, but there's real hope it could be significantly better in 2025.

Defensive Tackles (4): Christian Barmore, Milton Williams, Joshua Farmer, Khyiris Tonga

This isn't the same flimsy, banged-up offensive front from a year ago. A healthy Christian Barmore is back in the mix, and the Patriots added two potential game-changers in former Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Milton Williams and rookie fourth-round draft pick Joshua Farmer. It's a solid base for a unit that has tremendous promise for the future.

Edge Rushers (5): Harold Landry III, Keion White, Anfernee Jennings, K'Lavon Chaisson, Bradyn Swinson

The Patriots were the worst team in the league last year in sack percentage. That has to change if the defense has any hopes of getting over the hump in 2025. The team has made efforts to ensure that it does with the additions of veteran Harold Landry III and promising rookie fifth-round draft pick Bradyn Swinson.

Veteran edge rusher Keion White should also be significantly better in his third year. Milton Williams and Christian Barmore working together on the line should create more opportunities for the pass rushers to get home.

Linebackers (5): Robert Spillane, Jahlani Tavai, Jack Gibbens, Christian Elliss, Marte Mapu

The Patriots made sweeping changes at every level on defense, including the linebacker position. Robert Spillane will likely be the veteran running the show with this group. At first glance, Jahlani Tavai stands out as the other top linebacker in the group, but don't be surprised if Christian Elliss surpasses him on the depth chart.

Tavai is banged up and entering training camp on the active/PUP list. Elliss played across from Spillane during the spring practices, and that could remain the case even when Tavai returns.

Cornerbacks (5): Christian Gonzalez, Carlton Davis III, Marcus Jones, Alex Austin, Marcellas Dial Jr.

Christian Gonzalez recently made an ESPN top-10 list as the sixth-ranked cornerback in the NFL. However, an argument could easily be made that he could be even higher on that list. One veteran NFL assistant even went as far as calling him the "next great one" and comparing him to Denver Broncos star cornerback Patrick Surtain II.

The Patriots got him some help on the other side this year by signing former Super Bowl champion Carlton Davis III in free agency. With Marcus Jones manning the slot, this could be one of the best cornerback units in the league this season.

Safeties (5): Kyle Dugger, Jabrill Peppers, Craig Woodson, Dell Pettus, Jaylinn Hawkins

The Patriots are stacked at both cornerback and safety. Kyle Dugger and Jabrill Peppers are both strong options in the defensive backfield, and the team has quality depth with Dell Pettus, Jaylinn Hawkins and rookie fourth-round draft pick Craig Woodson. Don't be surprised if the Patriots have a top-five secondary in the 2025 season.

Special Teams (4): K Andres Borregales, P Bryce Baringer, LS Julian Ashby, ST Brenden Schooler

The focus wasn't solely on improving on offense and defense for the Patriots. They also made efforts to improve on special teams by drafting kicker Andres Borregales and long snapper Julian Ashby. Borregales was one of the best kickers in the country, and Ashby had enough eyes on him that the Patriots opted to draft him over getting into a likely bidding war with other teams.

Meanwhile, Brenden Schooler is filling the Matthew Slater role as a First-Team All-Pro, while Bryce Baringer has proven himself to be a solid punter for the Patriots.
