Stan Van Gundy cautions against calling Victor Wembanyama an ‘alien’ for political reasons

Stan Van Gundy has never been afraid to state his beliefs or to get political during NBA broadcasts.

He has criticized Donald Trump and called Robert F. Kennedy Jr. a “clown” who “went off the rails.”

And so it’s not much of a surprise that Van Gundy responded when his broadcast partner Michael Grady explained during the NBA Cup that Victor Wembanyama’s nickname was “The Alien.”

“The only thing is, in the current political environment, you gotta watch that word, Michael Grady,” Van Gundy said. “They deport those. We do not want Victor Wembanyama deported. Let’s go with a different nickname.”

Trump came into office promising to use ICE to deport more than 10 million unauthorized migrants living in the U.S.

It’s unclear how many people have been deported, but more than 59,000 migrants were detained as of late September and according to Pro Publica more than 170 American citizens have been detained.

Wembanyama and the Spurs will face Jalen Brunson and the Knicks in the NBA Cup championship game Tuesday night in Las Vegas.

Players on the championship team earn $530,933 and the runners-up get $212,373.
