The 31-year-old guard is looking to get his career back on track.
Fresh Intel Reveals Why Marcus Smart Rejected Knicks Before Lakers Move originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Before Marcus Smart landed with the Los Angeles Lakers, the New York Knicks were very much in the mix to sign the veteran guard. However, the latest reporting has revealed why Smart ultimately passed on New York.
According to Stefan Bondy of the New York Post, the Knicks had indeed “checked in” on Smart following his buyout from the Washington Wizards. But there was one key issue: playing time.
“Knicks had checked in on Marcus Smart,” Bondy tweeted, “but my understanding is he desired a spot with a clearer path to playing time. Smart is reportedly headed to the Lakers after agreeing to a buyout with the Wizards.”
Bondy followed up with additional insight on Sunday morning. “Per source, Knicks couldn’t offer the type of role Marcus Smart was looking for,” he added.

The 2022 NBA Defensive Player of the Year reportedly prioritized a situation where he could contribute more consistently and have a significant impact on the court.
That wasn’t likely in New York, where Jalen Brunson is locked in as the starting point guard, and the rotation is already deep with guards like Mikal Bridges, Josh Hart and Miles McBride.
Injuries have plagued Smart in recent seasons. Since leaving the Boston Celtics after the 2022-23 season, the 31-year-old guard has only played in 54 games over the last two years.
With the Lakers, Smart steps into a backcourt that needs his defensive intensity and veteran leadership, especially after L.A. made some significant roster moves, including bringing in center Deandre Ayton. The move gives him a real opportunity to play meaningful minutes off the bench alongside Luka Doncic and LeBron James.
While the Knicks showed interest, Smart clearly chose the better basketball fit and a clearer path to playing time in Los Angeles.
